Propecia Review

Propecia is the first and only FDA-approved pill demonstrated to treat male pattern hair loss (MPHL) on the vertex (top of head) and anterior mid-scalp area (middle front of head) in men only. There is not sufficient evidence that Propecia works for receding hairlines at the temples.

Propecia - How it Works

Propecia works on a key cause of hair loss by significantly reducing the amount of DHT. Specifically, Propecia inhibits the formation of DHT in your scalp. Lowering DHT appears to inhibit the further shrinking of affected hair follicles. DHT is a substance in the body that can shrink the hair follicle until it no longer produces visible hair. Scientists believe DHT and family history are key factors in hair loss. Propecia helps regrow visible hair and reduces further hair loss.

It is, in fact, the first and only FDA-approved pill proven to treat male pattern hair loss on the vertex (top of head) and anterior mid-scalp area (middle front of head) in men.

Propecia - How to Take

Take Propecia exactly as directed by your doctor.

Take each dose with a full glass of water. Propecia can be taken with or without food. It is important to take Propecia regularly to get the most benefit.

Take Propecia daily and you could see results in as little as 3 months. If you stop taking Propecia, however, your results will gradually go away over 12 months. And if Propecia hasn’t worked in 12 months, further treatment is unlikely to be of benefit.

Propecia Side Effects

  • Stop taking Propecia and seek emergency medical attention if you experience an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives).
  • Other, less serious side effects have been reported but usually resolve with continued treatment. Continue to take finasteride and notify your doctor if you experience decreased libido (sex drive); decreased volume of ejaculate; impotence (trouble getting or keeping an erection); or breast tenderness or enlargement.

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Propecia Precautions

Propecia is not indicated for use by women. Propecia is in the FDA pregnancy category X. This means that it is known to cause birth defects in an unborn baby. Women who are or who may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken Propecia tablets, because the medication could be absorbed through the skin. Propecia is known to cause birth defects in a developing male baby. Exposure to whole tablets should be avoided whenever possible, however exposure to whole tablets is not expected to be harmful as long as the tablets are not swallowed. It is not known whether Propecia passes into breast milk, and thus should not be taken by breastfeeding women. Propecia may pass into the semen of men, but a pregnant woman's contact with the semen of a man taking finasteride is not an issue for concern.
